Complete Guide & Tips for Hiking Mount Ijen Blue Fire

Mount Ijen is one of the most iconic travel destinations in Banyuwangi and the world. Renowned for its rare Blue Fire phenomenon, it has only one counterpart on Earth, located in Iceland. This natural wonder attracts thousands of adventure seekers from all over the world every year.

If you are planning to conquer Ijen’s summit and witness this magical blue fire first-hand, here is a complete guide and helpful hiking tips to make your journey safe, comfortable, and memorable.

1. Best Time to Visit

The Mount Ijen hiking trail opens at 02:00 AM WIB in the early morning. To see the Blue Fire clearly, it is highly recommended to start climbing as soon as the gate opens. The Blue Fire will fade away as daylight starts to break around 05:00 AM WIB.

The absolute best months to visit are during the dry season (July - September). During this time, the trail is dry and not slippery, and the sulfur gas is less dense, giving you the best possible visibility.

2. Physical & Mental Preparation

Although the hiking trail is well-maintained and wide, the 3-kilometer route is quite steep, with slopes ranging from 15 to 35 degrees. The normal climb takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the crater rim.

Do some light exercise like jogging or climbing stairs a few days before your hike to prepare your leg muscles and stamina.

3. Mandatory Gear to Bring

Temperatures at the summit of Mount Ijen can drop drastically to 8-12 degrees Celsius at night. Make sure you wear appropriate clothing:

  • Warm Jacket / Windbreaker: Protects against strong, freezing winds.
  • Hiking Shoes / Sturdy Sneakers: Good grip on sandy, steep trails.
  • Gas Mask (Respirator): Absolutely essential to protect your lungs from dense, toxic sulfur fumes. You can rent one at the Paltuding base camp if you don’t have your own.
  • Flashlight / Headlamp: Your main light source during the midnight climb.
  • Gloves & Beanie: Keeps your head and hands warm.

4. Respect Local Workers

When you descend into the crater to see the Blue Fire up close, always give way to the local sulfur miners. They carry 70-90 kg of raw sulfur in baskets up the steep, narrow, rocky path. Step aside and let them pass safely.
